New Jersey
Transportation Heritage Center

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The overall intent of this project is to rehabilitate motor coaches that are representative of those that were assigned to the State's bus routes in the 1950's and 1960's. Six of these vehicles were employed by the largest carrier in the State, the Public Service Coordinated Transport Co.; two were employed by the North Boulevard IBOA and Holloway Bus Service; one was a service vehicle used by Capital Transit. Two types of rehabilitation will be undertaken:

  • Rehabilitation sufficient to allow for the transport of passengers. The buses would conform to all state and federal inspection requirements. This will allow the use of these vehicles for special operations sponsored by Friends, the Heritage Center, NJ TRANSIT or other appropriate organizations.
  • Rehabilitation sufficient to place the vehicle in operable condition. The vehicle could be operated by staff from Friends, the Heritage Center or NJ TRANSIT for exhibition in various parts of the state or within the Heritage Center site. Passengers would not be accommodated.

Six of the vehicles are still titled to NJ TRANSIT. As per the attached letter, NJ TRANSIT welcomes the rehabilitation of these vehicles. Additionally, the title of these vehicles will be transferred to the Heritage Center when it has the facilities in place to store these vehicles. In the interim, these vehicles will be housed at NJ TRANSIT's Lakewood storage facility.

When rehabilitation is complete, these buses along with others owned by both Friends and NJ TRANSIT, will be the principal tools utilized to interpret motor coach operations in New Jersey. Together with similar railroad, trolley motor freight and canal artifacts, they will tell document New Jerseys' transportation heritage.

DESCRIPTION AND SCOPE OF WORK FOR EACH VEHICLE

The following pages provide a description and the scope of work for each of the nine vehicles to be rehabilitated by this project. This scope of work may be modified pursuant to a review by prospective bidders who may be interested in undertaking this project.

It is also the intent of the rehabilitation effort to place these vehicles in a condition that approximates their "as delivered" condition. The extent to which this can be accomplished will be dependent on our ability to obtain genuine new or used parts.

Please provide any comments you may have on this project to admin@njthc.org.
